The Technology Education Department of High Point Regional High School operates across 5 different rooms in the South side of the building, near the Senior Courtyard. Each multi-use room was updated in 2001, is connected to the school’s high-speed network, and is furnished with contemporary equipment that reflects industry standards.
High Point understands the value of leading-edge technology. The CAD room has more than 20 cutting-edge desktop computers, which include quad-core processors and nVidia workstation graphics cards. Students learn how to use software including Autodesk products, ArcView GIS, Microsoft Office, Geodesy Courseware, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Multisim Electronics Workbench, PTC Pro, and West Point Bridge Designer.
Mechanical Motion and Prototyping Lab rm 120
Mechanical Movement is an elective where freshman can learn the principles, construction, and application of automated devices. Room 120 is host to floor machines for wood and metal.
Engineering Design, Communication Technology, Biotechnology, and WiE Lab rm 121
Room 121 hosts the Engineering Design 1, Communication Technology, Biotechnology, and Women in Engineering (WiE) classes. The perimeter is lined with desktop PCs while the interior of the room has student workbenches. A drill press, scroll saw, and belt sander are in the rear corner and a power chord hangs above each work bench. This encourages the development of distinct areas of work where students can collaborate on different projects without being in each other’s way. Physical distance from machines and hanging power chords also contribute to classroom safety.
All students are instructed in good practices with Microsoft Office software. When presenting information or projects, groups or individuals are strongly encouraged to use the projector and SmartBoard touch surface and a prepared media presentation. In the appropriate classes, students are also instructed to use software including: ArcView GIS, Multisim Electronics Workbench, and West Point Bridge Designer.
PETT and Engineering Design Lab rm 122
Room 122 is the largest and most used of the Tech Ed classrooms. It includes areas for machining, computer work, and electronics assembly as well as general work surfaces. Students have supervised access to a wide variety of hand tools, power tools, and machines after completing a work safety unit in the beginning of the year. For electronics, soldering irons are available for each student and multimeters and variable DC power supplies are available to share. Advanced levels may borrow other equipment (eg oscilloscopes, AC power supplies, function generators) from the Science Department. A section in the rear of the room can be configured for work during PETT’s small engines unit.
CAD and Architecture Lab rm 123
Students in Architecture and CAD classes learn how properly create both traditional technical sketches and modern computer-aided drawings. All students learn how to use a full range of Autodesk Products (mainly Inventor, Revit, and 3ds Max), and are distributed keys for free student-edition software for use at home through agreement with Autodesk, Inc.
Woodshop rm 124
In Woodshop, students learn how to safely and effectively use a variety of floor machines and hand tools. Proper technique and planning is emphasized. Students have the option to take home assigned projects after grading.
